Music Theory for Flutists
Dear Flute teachers and students,
Do you need music theory books for your students, or are you a flute player looking to improve your understanding of music theory?
Have a look at the titles below.
There are several theory workbooks specifically for flute students (and very young flute students also) that have been suggested by other flute teachers in various flute discussion groups.
Here's a short list:
1. "Explorations in Music", by Joanne Haroutounian. There are 7 workbooks in this series. All come with CD's for ear-training. They cover everything from the very basics for children of age 6-9 all the way to first year college theory.
2. Theory Made Easy for Little Children by Lina Ng (two volumes).
Aimed at ages 4-7. These two colourful/fun books are available at several online shops. Here's one sample listing.
3. "Building Blocks of Flute Playing" by Christina Andrews
for beginner flutists (some theory is included in this complete flute playing beginner method book) This book looks great, and I'm going to order it and write more about it in future. See: Ecoutez Publishing
4. Basic ear-training and music theory workbooks for all ages with CDs: This is the Canadian workbook series: Sound Advice. This is the music theory and ear training books recommended by my fellow Conservatory teachers for their string players.
5. Standard Theory books recommended: Mark Sarnecki Preliminary Rudiments and Rudiments 1-2
Eric Taylor's "Music Theory in Practice" workbooks published by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in England (uses British terms for note values)
6. For teenaged or adult flute students: This one sounds TERRIFIC!!
Flute Theory Workout by Lisa Garner Santa
Flute/Theory Workout - by Lisa Garner Santa, Matthew Santa, and Thomas Hughes
The Flute/Theory Workout efficiently introduces full-range scalar technique while introducing music theory fundamentals at the same time. The included accompanimet CD not only adds variety to your practice, but can also assist in improving your rhythm, technical evenness and intonation and can even serve as a backdrop for beginning improvisation! The Flute/Theory Workout is available from:
www.fluteworld.com and www.flute4u.com
7. Susan Maclagan, flute teacher in Canada recommended: "I teach quite a few adult beginners who have no previous musical experience. I really like the following book as it progresses slowly, the concepts are explained clearly, and there are lots of exercises:
"Keyboard Theory" in 3 volumes by Grace Vandendool. Volume 1 is called "Basic Rudiments." Published by Frederick Harris Music."
8. Online self-teaching theory courses (free) are at these links.
